The Case for Culture North East

New Narratives

New Narratives for the North East is a project which sees 15 writers tell their stories of the region - helping to shape its future in the process.

What is New Narratives

Claire Malcolm, New Writing North, explains.

The Project

The project – a collaboration between North East Culture Partnership, New Writing North and Durham Book Festival – was launched in 2019 and has produced work in a number of genres, including essays, films and podcasts.

The work formed part of a special digitally-focused Durham Book Festival and will also be turned into an anthology, due to be published in 2021. The whole series is available to view on the Durham Book Festival website.

The 15 writers who won commissions to take part in New Narratives represent a wide variety of background, location, age and culture. Despite the commissions being completed against a backdrop of a global pandemic and Brexit, the writers were asked to create a deep, long lasting examination of the North East and those who call the area home.

The project has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, Durham Book Festival, and Arts Council England.
